With changes in student lifestyles and the phenomenal growth of the mobile phone industry in the last 5 years its accepted that students expect to regularly communicate with friends and family both in and outside of their place of study, but of course at a price.

Contract telephones although sold with a new handset and promises of say £30 a month basic charge with a number of free text massages and minutes. Although these offers appear attractive sometimes the deals are not right for everyone, as staff (in mobile phone shops) really push for sales - driven presumably by commission. Stretching to expensive contracts can mean that sacrifices have to be made with average student budget. So before taking out a mobile phone contract ask yourself.

- Will you use your phone that much?
- How much can you afford each month?

So what else is there?
A number of providers including EasyMobile and Tesco have entered the Pay As You Go market where you only pay for the calls you make or the text messages you send. There are no minimum monthly charges or penalties so you only pay what you can afford.

Making international calls:
Then why not get a Skype phone, you can call over the internet using Skype message service. It works in a similar way to MSN messenger but with where you communicate via a USB telephone. No problem, why not look on Ebay for a second hand phone as new Pay As You Go models from highstreet shops can be expensive. Remember that you are at university, would you really rather have a nice phone and no money... the choice is yours.
