The Guide to (Student) Council Tax.
Moved into rented accommodation? Council tax bill landed on your doorstep? Don't panic; in fact don't even do anything until you have read this.
What is council tax?
Council tax is a property tax, collected by your local Council to finance the local amenities; it is based on where you live (the area), the value of your home and who lives in it. As a student, you may be exempt or pay less tax depending on your situation.
Am I exempt from paying?
If you live in halls of residence (as long as there are only students living there), or if you live in a private flat where everyone is studying full time then you will be exempt from paying council tax.
Students studying a full-time course totaling a minimum of 21 hours a week for a minimum of 24 weeks a year may get a reduction as will students who are under 20 years old, and studying a course not above A levels, ONC or OND. If you live with someone who is not a student, you may still be able to get a single-person discount of about 25%.
How do I contact the council?
Simple, pick up the phone or pop into the local council building, where you will often have to present or forward proof that you are a full time student.
Ask the admin office at uni for a letter or certificate in this effect and explain why you need it.
Anything else I should know?
Yes, It is up to YOU to inform the council that you are a student, don't rely on them coming around to you, unless of course you are the type to welcome a court summons or the bailiffs into your student dwellings.
For more information on tax policy and eligibility contact your local council office directly.
